Review: Get Out

Image
Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined. I wasn't expecting to like this movie but I was pleasantly surprised.  Not only was it thrilling and mysterious it made me laugh, and it's not easy to make me laugh.  This movie is definitely worth spending money to see in theatre.

Review: Fist Fight

Image
On the last day before summer vacation, high school teacher Andy Campbell tries his best to keep it together amid senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that threaten his job. Things go from bad to worse when he crosses Ron Strickland, the school's toughest and most feared teacher. When Strickland gets fired, he challenges Campbell to a fight after school. As news of the showdown spreads like wildfire, poor Andy desperately seeks any way out of his date with certain doom. Those who know me know it takes a lot to make me laugh, this movie didn't even get a snicker out of me.  The all star cast had me hoping I would LOL, but I was left disappointed. Do not pay to see this movie, only worth it if it's free. Fist Fight Trailer

Review: The Great Wall

Image
When a mercenary warrior (Matt Damon) is imprisoned within the Great Wall, he discovers the mystery behind one of the greatest wonders of the world. As wave after wave of marauding beasts besiege the massive structure, his quest for fortune turns into a journey toward heroism as he joins a huge army  of elite warriors to confront the unimaginable and seemingly unstoppable force. I love an epic historical film but this was a big let down.  It felt more like a fantasy film than anything else.  The only thing that kept me watching was the colourful costumes and the cinematography.  Otherwise, the story and acting was very dry.   Don't waste any money seeing this movie, only worth watching if it's free.

Review/Predictions - Actor in a Leading Role

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE NOMINEES CASEY AFFLECK Manchester by the Sea ANDREW GARFIELD Hacksaw Ridge RYAN GOSLING La La Land VIGGO MORTENSEN Captain Fantastic DENZEL WASHINGTON Fences Once again all the Nominees deserve to win this award this year.  This one is very difficult for me to choose a winner.   I was pleasantly surprised by Viggo's performance but I don't believe it is up there with the performances by Andrew, Denzel and Casey.  Ryan is up there too but I believe he has done better than this role in the past. PREDICTIONS  Who I want to win - Casey Affleck Who will win - Ryan Gosling

Review/Predictions - Actress In Leading Role

NOMINEES ISABELLE HUPPERT Elle RUTH NEGGA Loving NATALIE PORTMAN Jackie EMMA STONE La La Land MERYL STREEP  Florence Foster Jenkins The Nominees this year all deserve this award, outstanding performances. Meryl made me laugh, Emma made me sing, Natalie took me back in time.  For me the most astonishing performance was by Isabelle, when an actress has to be raped on screen more than once it has to be a most difficult place to go, and she did this shockingly well. PREDICTIONS  Who I want to win - Isabelle Huppert Who will win - Isabelle Huppert

THE NOMINEES ARE: roducers FENCES HACKSAW RIDGE HELL OR HIGH WATER HIDDEN FIGURES LA LA LAND LION  MANCHESTER BY THE SEA ARRIVAL  MOONLIGHT    The Best Picture Nominees did not disappoint this year.  I can't say for sure that the "whitewash" scandal of last years nominees has anything to do with the numerous African American nominated films this year or if there were just more African American quality films this year.  Nonetheless, all the nominees are very deserving this year.
